Sarcoma
Dr. Alessandro Gronchi, MD, is Chief of the Sarcoma Service and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori (National Cancer Institute) in Milan, Italy. He received his MD degree from Milan University in 1992, completed a residency in General Surgery in 1997, and undertook a fellowship in Surgical Oncology in 1998.
Additionally, he holds the National Scientific qualification for full professorship in General Surgery. Dr. Gronchi has led the Sarcoma Service since 2001 and became Chair of the Department of Surgery in 2022.
Institutional research activities
Dr. Gronchi is deeply involved in institutional research activities focused on sarcoma. His work encompasses neoadjuvant therapies for extremity and retroperitoneal sarcomas, identifying new therapeutic targets for specific subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma (STS), and exploring the genomic characterization of desmoid fibromatosis (DF) to understand its role in tumor progression.
Furthermore, his research delves into mechanisms of resistance to therapy in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). He serves as Principal Investigator in numerous Italian and international clinical trials on STS, DF, and GIST.
Leadership roles
In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Gronchi holds various leadership roles within key organizations. He is a member of the board of directors of the Italian Sarcoma Group, the European Society of Surgical Oncology (2020-2024), and serves as the international representative on the executive council of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) (2021-2024).
Moreover, he has previously chaired the EORTC Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcoma Group (2015-2017), served as president of the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (2016), and led the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology (2019-2021).
Global recognition
Dr. Gronchi’s influence extends globally. He is a founding member of the Trans-Atlantic Australasian RetroPeritoneal Sarcoma Working Group (TARPSWG), a collaborative network that includes over 180 institutions worldwide. With more than 500 scientific publications to his name, his research achievements are widely recognized (Scopus H-index of 100).
He also contributes as an Associate Editor to several prominent journals, including Annals of Surgical Oncology, Journal of Surgical Oncology, Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology, Therapeutics Advances in Medical Oncology, and Updates in Surgery.
His memberships include the European Surgical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and honorary membership in the Polish Society of Surgical Oncology.
